CoolxDad is a Houston-based non-profit organization making a powerful impact in communities of color. Founded by Kevin Barnett in 2022, the Houston native was inspired to create CoolxDad following the tragic events surrounding George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Barnett grew up with a single mother. Recognizing the lack of a consistent father figure in his life inspired him to create an organization that supports the community, particularly the younger generation, and empowers men of color while breaking negative stereotypes surrounding fatherhood.
However, the organization is not exclusive to biological fathers. It’s open to non-biological fathers and single mothers who play the role of both mom and dad, symbolizing the ‘x’ in CoolxDad. Recognizing fatherhood exists in other forms, the organization formed a women-led advisory board to help balance the organization’s mission.
From hosting summer camps for kids to organizing a holiday gift drive called Color Box and providing parental resources to fathers with CoolxTips, CoolxDad aims to inspire fathers of color and create positive role models with their many initiatives.
On November 28, CoolxDad is partnering with Saint Arnold’s Turkey Trot, a family-friendly run featuring various courses, including a wheelchair division, along the Downtown Houston skyline. The portion of the entry fees supports CoolxDad’s mission. Early bird entry starts at $35 and ends this week. Click here to register.
