HOUSTON – Parking lot takeovers aren’t just something that happens late at night in unfamiliar parts of town. We’re seeing them show up in everyday places like shopping centers, restaurants, and strip centers. The same spots families visit every single week.

The concern is only growing. With more people flooding into Houston for major events like the Rodeo, Spring Break, and soon the World Cup, these gatherings have more opportunities to take hold. Large crowds, tight spaces, and things can escalate fast.

The reality on the ground

Houston Police can’t always get to these calls right away. The city is massive, and while resources are growing, what’s available is being stretched thin. That doesn’t mean you’re on your own.

There are other law enforcement agencies that can step in, including your local precinct constables. We’ve seen it work. Constable Jerry Garcia’s team cleared out a strip center off the Gulf Freeway that was tied to takeover activity.

What the law allows

Here’s something a lot of people don’t know: if you’re caught participating in one of these takeovers, Texas law gives officers the power to seize your vehicle. In some cases, that car can be auctioned off.

For Business Owners

If you own or manage a business, there’s a tool you can use right now that many don’t know about called a trespass affidavit.

By signing one, you give law enforcement the legal authority to come onto your property and act.

Once signed officers can:

  1. Disperse gatherings on your property without waiting for additional authorization.
  2. Arrest anyone refusing to leave for trespassing on the spot.
  3. Seize vehicles connected to takeover activity on your property.

These situations can escalate quickly. Knowing who to call and what tools exist can protect your property and the people around you.
