HOUSTON – Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star is dedicated to empowering youth through one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of every child in five markets across Texas. The organization’s mission centers on helping children reach their full potential by providing consistent, caring adult mentors who serve as positive role models.
In Houston, Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Houston - which falls under the BBBS Lone Star umbrella - has made a significant impact by connecting approximately 2,000 young people with mentors who guide them toward brighter futures. These relationships help youth build confidence, improve academic performance, and develop essential life skills. The organization focuses on fostering long-lasting bonds that support children through critical stages of their development. According to a representative from BBBS Lone Star, “98% of youth who graduate from our program are employed, enrolled in postsecondary education, or enlisted after high school.”
Volunteer to mentor a child as their “Big”
Right now, more than 800 children from the Greater Houston area are on a list waiting for a match with their “Big.” Bigs are mentors who commit to spending quality time with their “Littles,” offering guidance, encouragement and friendship with outings approximately twice per month. Major league sports teams and local attractions offer support for outings by providing tickets and events specifically for Bigs and their Littles.
