More than 700,000 trees have been planted in and around Houston thanks to this nonprofit

Trees for Houston (Trees for Houston)

HOUSTON – Founded in 1983, Trees for Houston aims to plant, protect, and promote trees in the city, fostering a healthier environment and beautifying the local landscape.

Trees for Houston has planted more than 700,000 trees in Houston and the surrounding area since its inception. Through various initiatives, Trees for Houston works to ensure that trees are planted in neighborhoods, parks, schools and along roadways, making the city greener.

In their 2023-2024 season alone, Trees for Houston planted 36,277 trees in public green spaces. They planted 3,577 trees at 59 local schools in the same timeframe.

Trees for Houston engages with the community by recruiting volunteers for tree planting events, offering educational programs, and through community tree giveaways. If you are interested in hosting a tree giveaway in your neighborhood, you can make the request at this link. You can also donate a tribute tree and have it planted at Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy in Southwest Houston in memory of a loved one or to mark a special occasion.

The organization’s work to plant and distribute trees is having a positive environmental impact. Trees provide cooling shade, mitigate water run-off and erosion especially in Houston’s flood-prone areas, and help clean our air. They also provide food and shelter for birds and wildlife.

In addition to planting trees, Trees for Houston focuses on tree maintenance and preservation. The organization works to ensure that existing trees are healthy and thriving, providing resources and support for proper care. This holistic approach to urban forestry helps to create a sustainable environment for future generations.

The Trees for Houston website includes a treasure trove of helpful resources for identifying tree species as well as tips for planting and watering trees.
