Nonprofit brings smiles to pediatric cancer patients in ten Texas hospitals in loving memory of a special little girl

HOUSTONB.I.G. Love Cancer Care is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive support to families dealing with childhood cancer. Founded with the mission to ease the burdens faced by these families, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care offers a range of services designed to address both practical and emotional needs.

Mission and Vision

Founded in 2007, the “B.I.G.” in B.I.G. Love stands for “Brooke’s Incredible Gift.” Jessica Phillips and her family created the nonprofit in honor of her daughter Brooke, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at age three. Brooke fought courageously for two years and passed away in September of 2006. She was five years old.

Created in Brooke’s honor, the mission of B.I.G. Love Cancer Care is to provide tangible help and emotional support to children with cancer and their families. The organization aims to meet the immediate needs of these families, ensuring they feel supported and cared for during one of the most challenging times in their lives. By focusing on love, hope, and compassion, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by childhood cancer.

Services Offered

B.I.G. Love Cancer Care offers a variety of services tailored to the unique needs of families dealing with childhood cancer. They are currently serving patients and their families in ten Texas hospitals, including Texas Children’s Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hermann and M.D. Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital. Their services include:

  1. Weekly Wishlist: The organization provides weekly deliveries of groceries, toiletries, and items that patients and their families request. This service helps alleviate the stress of daily necessities, allowing families to focus on their child’s treatment and recovery.
  2. Holiday Celebrations: Recognizing the importance of creating joyful memories, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care organizes celebrations for holidays spent in the hospital. These events bring smiles and a sense of normalcy to children undergoing treatment.
  3. New Diagnosis Baskets: The nonprofit assembles and distributes care packages filled with necessities like snacks and hygiene items. These packages help families suddenly admitted to the hospital, sometimes after a long wait in the emergency room.
  4. Financial Assistance: Understanding the financial strain that cancer treatment can impose, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care provides financial assistance to help cover expenses such as travel, lodging, and medical bills.
  5. Emotional Support: The organization loves families “B.I.G.” through counseling services and support groups, helping families navigate the emotional challenges of a cancer diagnosis. One such group is called SibStrong, and it focuses on siblings of childhood cancer patients and how they can cope with a diagnosis that impacts their family’s way of life.
