This academic year was particularly challenging because of the pandemic, but these students still rose above and beyond in school. The sixth $2,500 Senior Scholarship was awarded to Grant Ebel from Magnolia West High School in Magnolia ISD. Ebel has been accepted to the University of Texas, where he will be pursuing a degree in biology with hopes of becoming a physician in the future.

AUSTIN, Texas – Racist emails sent to the University of Texas amid a debate over the school song “The Eyes of Texas” were “abhorrent and hateful” but don’t truly represent the Longhorns’ alumni and fans, university President Jay Hartzell said Tuesday. AdSince Monday, at least two former players have tweeted they received threats from Texas fans for protesting the song. “A few extremist views in the sample of emails the Texas Tribune reported on do not speak for the 540,000 proud Longhorn alumni who actively support our students and university. Out of the many emails I received this fall, a very small number included comments that were truly abhorrent and hateful. The title of the song is taken from a favored saying of a former school president who had mimicked remarks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

They blasted off emails to UT-Austin President Jay Hartzell, calling the image of the abandoned quarterback "disgusting," "embarrassing" and "disturbing." "The Eyes of Texas is non-negotiable," wrote another graduate who said they’ve had season tickets since 1990 and whose name was redacted by the university. While those who emailed represent a fraction of the more than 540,000 UT-Austin alumni, their threats had some university fundraisers sounding the alarms. "'The Eyes of Texas' should not only unite us, but hold all of us accountable to our institution’s core values. "I know this much," Sarkisian said, "'The Eyes of Texas' is our school song.

Nearly a quarter-million doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine arrived at hospitals and health care facilities around Texas this week. Questions remain about who will be first in line for the vaccine once healthcare workers and long-term care residents have had their chance to be inoculated. Decisions on how vaccines are allocated are made by a state panel of advisers — composed of lawmakers, local and state health officials, and medical experts and researchers — and finalized by Hellerstedt. Texas is participating in the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program, a federal program to vaccinate residents and staff of long-term care facilities. Vaccine doses will be distributed free to those facilities, which are set to receive them starting on Monday, Abbott’s office said last week.

AUSTIN, Texas – A drug ring largely operated by current and former University of Texas students used apps and social media to sell counterfeit Adderall and Xanax often laced with fentanyl, the Department of Justice announced Friday. Justice officials said 13 people, including eight current and former students, have been charged with trafficking LSD, fentanyl and methamphetamine pills. Prasad accepted payments for the drugs via apps including Venmo and Paypal, plus in cash. Former University of Texas at San Antonio professor Rose Rodriguez-Rabin is accused of providing Prasad with methamphetamine-laced counterfeit drugs “on numerous occasions,” Sofer said. Facing restrictive policies prohibiting team sports, the University of New Mexico’s basketball teams have fled their home state, seeking refuge in Lubbock and Amarillo — two of the hardest hit coronavirus hot spots in Texas. The men’s team will reside in Lubbock temporarily, though UNM is still finalizing where the team will practice and play games. At West Texas A&M University, where the UNM women’s team will play, an official said the school is “pleased to host” the Lobos. The state currently limits the number of people at large gatherings and LULAC national conventions typically attract thousands of activists. The group still plans to hold a national convention in Albuquerque in 2023 because the city and the LULAC's local chapters made financial commitments to hold an event in the city. LULAC national conventions and gatherings have attracted presidents, presidential candidates, and international leaders.

AUSTIN – Jay Hartzell officially became president of The University of Texas at Austin on Wednesday. The University of Texas System’s Board of Regents unanimously voted to make Hartzell president of the university after previously naming him the sole finalist for president in August. Hartzell, former dean of the UT-Austin business school, stepped into the role of interim president in April after former president Greg Fenves stepped down. Fenves was university president for five years before leaving to lead Emory University in Atlanta. “Seeing President Hartzell work and provide leadership during his time as interim president over the past few months compelled this board to name him the sole finalist for the job.

The University of Texas has made decisions on several key traditions and aspects of Longhorn football. Over the past few months, questions regarding the legendary “Eyes of Texas” song have been brought up by players and alumni. The University sent out a statement announcing some of those changes, which include the field being renamed to honor Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. The school said they will honor the Precursors, the first Black undergraduates to attend UT, with a monument. However, the “Eyes of Texas” song will remain.

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas mascot BEVO XIV, recently diagnosed with Bovine Leukemia Virus, peacefully died in his sleep Friday, according to University of Texas officials. The UT website says following a preliminary diagnosis of the illness last week, BEVO XIV had been resting at his ranch, where he died in the company of his best longhorn friend Spike and John T. and Betty Baker, the owners and caretakers of both BEVO XIV and his predecessor, BEVO XIII. BEVO XIV began his tenure at the age of two in 2004, and was on the sidelines for many historic moments. In addition to his prominent position on the sidelines at Texas Football games, BEVO XIV made multiple appearances at special events, including the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. The necessary funds to support the care and transport of BEVO are provided by the Silver Spurs BEVO Endowment.
