Daji Aswad is a meteorologist on the KPRC 2 Storm Tracker team. She joined in 2023.
Daji says her journey as a meteorologist is a full-circle moment, bringing her back to the city where her roots run deep.
She says Houston is where she discovered her calling and dreamed of one day sharing the wonders of weather with the world.
Daji describes being fascinated by the meteorologists on the news, saying their skillful blend of science and storytelling captivated her imagination. That's when the weather bug hit. Science and storytelling became her passion and only grew stronger over time. This passion led her to pursue broadcast meteorology and communication at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.
After graduation, Daji began her career at AccuWeather, where she documented the awe-inspiring wonders of nature, from the relentless fury of hurricanes to the serene beauty of snowstorms. She also worked at WISN in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was able to cover climate stories.
She says she's happy to be back in her hometown as a member of the KPRC 2 team.
At KPRC 2, she's received an Emmy nomination for covering the 2024 Derecho.
As a meteorologist at KPRC 2, Daji now has the privilege of giving a voice to the narratives of families, businesses, and schools profoundly affected by severe weather events. She says that witnessing the resilience of communities in the aftermath of tragedy has revealed to her the undeniable strength of hope.
Daji says she's grateful for the opportunity to share the captivating tales of weather, climate, and science within a community that has undergone the same transformative moments that have shaped her own life.
Her goal is to ignite a spark in the hearts of the next generation of young girls who share her love for science and storytelling, and encourages them to pursue their dreams.
