‘I’m so sorry:’ Pet cow wrangled, returned after escaping onto Houston freeway

HOUSTON – Some prefer dogs, others cats. Houstonian Stefany Ramirez has nine pet cows!

Early Wednesday morning, one of them escaped and ended up on the East Freeway.

“I think she was trying to get home,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez bought four-year-old Star on Tuesday from a farm in Conroe. Hours later, the next morning, she broke the front gate of the backyard.

The other cows walked into the front yard to graze, but Star kept going toward the Freeway.

Houston Transtar cameras showed Star walking along the Interstate 10 East Freeway shoulder near Beltway 8 around 8 a.m.

Drivers slowed down to have a look and to avoid coming too close. Harris County’s livestock team responded.

“I was scared [when I found out]” Ramirez said.

She hopped into a car with her brother and followed the police sirens and lights.

Deputies persuaded Star to walk off the freeway onto some nearby grass. She was given a shot to calm down, loaded onto a trailer, and returned home.

Ramirez said Star might have been headed north to her old home in Montgomery County.

KPRC 2 reporter Brandon Walker was at the scene as officials wrangled the animal.
