Pregnancy assault case dismissed against UH football player Carmello Brooks

A grand jury declined to indict Brooks; a separate misdemeanor case involving another pregnant woman remains pending

Carmello Brooks (University of Houston)

HOUSTON – A Harris County grand jury returned a no bill in the assault of a pregnant person case involving University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks.

The case stemmed from Brooks’ September arrest after investigators accused him of assaulting a woman who had recently learned she was pregnant. The woman disputed the allegations and told KPRC 2 Brooks was not aggressive toward her.

The case has now been dismissed, according to records, while a misdemeanor criminal mischief case involving an incident with a different pregnant victim remains pending.

In that case, investigators said Brooks allegedly became verbally aggressive during a conversation with the woman and damaged a door while trying to leave with her keys, according to court records.

Brooks’ defense attorney told KPRC 2 the defense submitted a packet which the grand jury considered in returning the no bill.

KPRC 2 has reached out to UH about the new development with Brooks’ criminal case.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment.
