Houston Food Bank provides food relief amid government shutdown
HOUSTON, Texas – Many Houston-area families who depend on SNAP benefits are desperate for answers Monday morning as it remains unclear when or if their benefits will be restored amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
That uncertainty has sparked a wave of local support.
The Houston Food Bank is hosting another large-scale food distribution this morning at West Houston Assistance Ministries , where families lined up early for food and essential items.
The event starts at 8 a.m., and registration is already full, but organizers say they’re planning food drives nearly every day this month to meet the growing need.
Local leaders, including Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones and District Attorney Sean Teare, are joining volunteers at today’s event to help load cars and connect families with resources.
Over the weekend, the Houston Food Bank hosted one of its largest distribution events yet at NRG Park, providing food to more than 5,000 families impacted by the shutdown and SNAP benefit freeze.
If you missed registration for today’s drive, the next event will be tomorrow at Bethel’s Helping Hands in Southwest Houston , starting at 8 a.m.
Organizers say the best way to support their efforts right now is through monetary donations. Just $1 helps provide three meals for families in need.
