It’s heating up in Houston, and while most people are reaching for water and cranking up the AC, your car needs just as much attention in this weather.
From blown tires to dead batteries, mechanics say extreme temperatures can push your car to the edge if you’re not staying ahead on maintenance.
Drivers across Houston shared what they do to prepare for the heat.
“Oil temperature, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and tire pressure — those are the main things I’m watching,” said Joey Strayler.
“I’m ready for the heat,” said Greg Barbosa. “I make sure my tires are right. I don’t want blowouts on the freeway.”
One local mechanic, Junior, walked us through what to check — especially if you don’t know much about cars.
“One of the most important things is checking the coolant and antifreeze,” he explained. “That’s what keeps the engine from overheating. You want to make sure the levels are full and that you don’t have any leaks. But never open the radiator when the engine is hot — wait until it cools overnight.”
Other tips include
- Test your battery: Heat can shorten its lifespan, especially if it’s over three years old
- Check your tires: Low pressure or worn tread can be dangerous in hot weather
- Top off fluids: Especially coolant and oil
- Pack an emergency kit: Include water, snacks, jumper cables, and a flashlight
The bottom line? A few minutes now could save you from a costly repair — or worse, being stranded on the side of the road.
As one driver put it: it’s not just about being ready for the heat — it’s about making sure your car is, too.
