HOUSTON – Meta’s popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage on Wednesday, leaving millions of users unable to access the services.

According to Downdetector, an online platform that tracks service disruptions, over 100,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while more than 70,000 reported problems with Instagram. The outage appears to have started around 9 a.m. CT and affected users globally.

Users attempting to access the platforms encountered error messages or saw their feeds fail to load. Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their frustrations and check for updates.

The cause of the disruption has not been disclosed.

This isn’t the first time Meta’s platforms have experienced major disruptions. In October 2021, a six-hour global outage affected Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger due to a faulty configuration change.
