HOUSTON – Houston firefighter Wayne Davis was released from the hospital Friday following a long battle with COVID-19.

Davis spent four months receiving treatment at Memorial Hermann Hospital, according to a release from HFD.

Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena said that COVID-19 “nearly destroyed” Davis’ lungs, and he almost died.

“It’s a ray of sunshine for our department,” Pena said.

When Davis left the hospital doors, cheers filled the air as family, friends, and colleagues greeted him.

Outside Memorial Hermann Hospital, an HFD rescue truck awaited him for his ride home.

Pena says Davis has a long road ahead of him.

“Today is a blessing for him, I’m just very thankful for him and his family,” he said. “The staff here at Memorial Hermann Hospital are incredible and they did an amazing job.”
