Crash involving Montgomery County deputy kills woman in Conroe, police say

CONROE, Texas – Conroe police are investigating after a deadly crash involving a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy Monday.

Investigators said a deputy called dispatch around 5:43 a.m. and said he was involved in a fleet crash on 45 southbound between South Loop 336 and Crighton. According to authorities, one person was fatally struck during the accident.

Conroe police said the 26-year-old woman, who was wearing dark-colored clothing when she was hit, was walking in the middle of the lane when a truck struck her.

“As they were merging onto the freeway, the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the lane, tried to avoid that and in return, the MCSO vehicle struck that truck after it struck the pedestrian which then struck another vehicle, so it was a chain reaction,” said Sgt. Jeff Smith.

None of the drivers were hurt.

Police had been searching for a woman matching the victim’s description.

“Conroe PD was dispatched to a suspicious person in the area of the HCA Hospital here in Conroe in reference to a female matching that description walking in and out of traffic, so officers had already been in the area looking and then approximately 25 minutes later is when the accident occurred,” said Smith.

Police closed the freeway southbound at Gladstell. The lanes have since reopened.
