La Porte ISD is navigating their way through the coronavirus pandemic by introducing several measures for students as they begin their school year.

The district announced Wednesday morning that all La Porte ISD schools will begin the year virtually in response to the surge of coronavirus cases.

“Health and safety are major concerns for all of us right now because of COVID-19,” said Dr. Walter Jackson, La Porte ISD superintendent of schools. “This virtual instruction plan provides the social distancing for students and staff. Our teachers will instruct from their individual classrooms, and students will receive instruction at home.”

Students who chose face-to-face instruction will return to campus on September 8.

La Porte ISD also notified parents that any technology they were provided due to school closures, they should continue using during the 2020-2021 school year.

A final parent survey has been sent out Tuesday to verify students’ instructional method. It will be available until August 12.

List of measures in place

  • Flexible methods of learning: District officials will provide alternative, flexible means of learning with the following: Distance learning, hybrid, and face-to-face. Whichever method of learning parents choose for their kids, students must attend 90% of the school year to receive proper credit.
  • Masks: Staff will be required to wear masks at all times. Students will also be required to wear masks on campus with the exception of extracurricular activities (such as band or sports), and during lunch.
  • PPE: The district will receive “a state allotment” of gloves, face masks and hand sanitizer.
  • Social Distancing: The district will implement strict social distancing protocols at all areas. Reminders will be posted all over school buildings, and desks will be separated to promote distancing between classmates.
  • Temperature screenings: Students and staff will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms regularly. Staff will also have their temperatures taken before each shift.
  • Sanitization: School buildings will go through rigorous, deep cleaning every day. Staff and students will be expected to wash or sanitize their hands frequently and will have access to disinfecting supplies.
