Patients traveling from out of town to the Texas Medical Center for cancer treatment already have a lot on their minds. Having a safe, clean, affordable place to stay does not need to be one of their worries, thanks to nonprofit organizations like Dan’s House of Hope and Houston Haven.
The organizations provide a welcoming space where cancer patients can stay close to their treatment centers while receiving emotional and practical support. Their missions reflect a commitment to standing alongside patients and their families with hope and strength while navigating their cancer journeys.

Dan’s House of Hope
Founded in memory of Dan Kenneavy, Dan’s House of Hope focuses on services for adolescent and young adult cancer patients. Kenneavy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at age 17, just before his senior year of high school, and battled cancer bravely until his passing in December 2009 at just 20 years old.
Dan’s family founded Dan’s House of Hope after seeing the lack of resources and support available to adolescent and young adult patients. They provided assistance to their first guest family in 2011 and opened the brick-and-mortar Dan’s House of Hope in Houston’s Museum District in 2014. Their hospitality house has private rooms and common areas to accommodate four patients and their caregivers at any time. Cancer patients ages 18-39 and their caregivers are welcome to stay at no charge during their treatment with breakfast provided daily.
Dan’s House of Hope also provides programs that help young adult patients bond and connect with others going through similar circumstances. The organization is hosting a S’mores Outdoors holiday social on December 6, and we would love your help to provide items for gift bags that will go to young adult cancer patients and their caregivers. Please consider purchasing something on their Amazon wish list - all items will be delivered directly to Dan’s House of Hope.

Houston Haven
Houston Haven provides low-cost private homes for families of cancer patients who live at least 60 miles outside of the Texas Medical Center. The nonprofit has ten single family homes where families can stay for up to three months plus four garage apartments for shorter stays. The homes are fully furnished and include utilities and basic household necessities. Cost to families runs just about $30-$35 per night.
In addition to providing housing, Houston Haven accommodates prayer requests and offers a sense of community through outings to local attractions for patients and their families.
